The Asakura Clan × Miroku Sumi Ink Painting Exhibition opens at the Asakura Gallery, beside the south entrance to the Reconstructed Townscape at the Ichijodani Asakura Family Historic Ruins. Creative ASUWA is among its supporters.
A special summer night, lit against four centuries of darkness.
The long echo of this Sengoku ground, caught in the heart and raised into a world of ink.
The exhibition runs from Sunday 2 August to Monday 31 August 2026. Admission is free.
Special exhibition: “Wrapped in the Night of Ten Thousand Lanterns”
The centrepiece is Wrapped in the Night of Ten Thousand Lanterns, winner of the Fukui Prefectural Board of Education Award at the 50th Fukui Prefecture Sumi Ink Painting Association Exhibition. It renders a scene wrapped in lantern light at night, in nothing but gradations of ink.
Several other works are shown alongside it. Please feel free to stop by.
About the artist: Miroku Hiratani
Born in Tokyo, Miroku Hiratani has studied calligraphy and sumi ink painting since childhood.
In 2023 Hiratani became a pupil of Hosetsu Morikawa and returned to sumi ink painting in earnest, since winning selections and awards at open exhibitions across Japan.
Since 2025 Hiratani has taught sumi ink painting classes in Fukui and Ishikawa. Alongside an energetic programme of solo shows and exhibitions with students, Hiratani works to share the appeal of sumi ink painting and of Fukui’s Echizen washi paper.
